Fitness has always been a part of my life and it is very important to me. I started riding a bicycle at an early age and have done exercise classes at various locations for many years. I was a member at Powerhouse Gym on Gull Road and the majority of my spin class partners were leaving and joining Borgess Health and Fitness. I soon followed and have been a member for 15+ years. Borgess has so much to offer.

When I started Borgess, I mostly did the spin classes. Of and on I would do strength training. Then I got into running, so I would utilize the treadmill, and still continue to incorporate strength training. I would meet with a trainer, get a new program, follow it for a few months and then quit. This cycle had been going on for quite a few years, winter would come, I would start strength training and then quit again.

In September 2015 Borgess announced they were introducing a new program called X-Factor. This program incorporated high intensity exercise with strength and endurance training and even Olympic lifting.  The first month was free to try. I tried it and I haven’t stopped. I absolutely love it. I’m no longer bored with strength training. It is something different everyday. Just when you you think you have tried everything, Steve and Chad(the trainers) will introduce a new exercise. I have been doing X-Factor faithfully for 18 months and I’m very happy with the results. Along with X-Factor, I ride my bicycle and run. I’m approaching 55 years of age and I’m in the best shape of my life. I can’t wait to show off my arms this summer!

During the month of March Borgess offered a calorie challenge. This was a good motivational tool also. I made it my goal to burn 1,000 calories a day. It was a tough challenge, I tweaked my diet, and on my non running days I would walk at night. It was a fun way to compete against other members and I managed to drop 10 pounds too. The challenges are fun.  I think everyone should give it a try.

My current goal is to keep moving and stay healthy. Diabetes runs in my family and I want to remain free from this disease. I truly believe exercise plays an important role in staying healthy. I love that Borgess has something for everyone regardless of age or the level of exercise that you want to do. Borgess Fitness Center is a great facility and I hope it is around for many more years. It is my happy place!
